Career Happy Hour Challenge!

What it is: A topic and teaching that is important for your career + a challenge for you - so that you will take action and get where you want to go (also: prizes!).  Career Happy Hour is about learning + doing (just learning doesn't often get results :) ).

Topic for this month: Mentoring

What you need to do to qualify for the prize: Watch the video and follow the steps below.  It's about 25-30 minutes total of your time (isn't your career worth 30 minutes?). Ready? Let's go!

Here's how you win the challenge:

To win the challenge and the $750 value that Cindi is giving away (you MUST follow these steps):

1. Watch the video and email or call someone you want to connect with as a potential mentor.

2. Go to facebook page for the RevClub (click here): and post the initials of your mentor and the timestamp of your email in the comments on the thread at the top of the page.

3. Tag Cindi in your comment using @my-foothold (so she gets notified that you did it!).

4. Relax and feel awesome.

THE CHALLENGE ENDS ON FRIDAY! (This is your cue to do it now)

Need a script to get started? Here you go...

Mentor email connection script from Cindi Schultz, Founder My Foothold

Subject line (Don’t take this lightly & keep it concise):
1. Your email subject has to be high quality. Your mentor gets a lot of email – don’t waste this ‘real estate’ with “Can I ask you a question."

2. Make it stand out. Here are a few ideas:
I’m working on [name of project or client account]. Do you have 5 mins to let me ask your opinion?

[Name some work the person did that interests you – be specific but concise]
I’d love to find about [note some achievement that you genuinely have an interest in], do you have a few minutes this week to meet?

The email body
You want to be professional but not too formal. If you already know the person you have an idea of the style of conversation that will work.
Be conversational while professional. Don’t slip into a slang or casual tone.

Intro: Hello, [Name],

Ask the person if they have a few minutes for you to drop by their office for a quick introduction.

Hi Sally,

Do you have a few minutes for me to stop by and say hello?

Short and to the point note: I’m interested in [whatever you put in your subject line plus add something you know about said topic – show you’re serious and have done your homework]. Do you have about 5 or 10 minutes for me to come by your office to introduce myself and let me ask you a bit about [the thing in the subject line]?

Be specific about what you’d like to chat about. This way once you get the ‘sure come to my office’ green light, you’re clear that when you get there – you both know what the conversation will be about.

Close: Thanks for your time, I’m looking forward to meeting you.
Use a formal business signature. If your company doesn’t use them, make one. It’s the right thing to do.

====That’s it for the email====

Some comments:
Be Persistent but not stalky. It may take a while to get a meeting. You don’t know your mentor’s travel or work schedule.

Don’t take it personally if they don’t reply. Busy people ignore emails all the time. That’s why your subject line will be important.

Take the chance to connect. You’re going to be really happy you did.
